The third edition of Fundamental of RF and Microwave Circuit Design covers many new materials and expands on topics previously discussed. One new chapter on power dividers and directional couplers has been added to this edition. One new chapter is also dedicated to RF and Microwave system analysis. Several chapters have seen significant expansion covering many important and practical topics. In-depth treatment of many conventional topics as well as new trends in modern radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC) design is considered in the new edition. In chapter 1, theory of wideband transformers is discussed in great detail. General and approximate analysis of several important transmission line transformers is presented. Modeling and analysis of on-chip inductors used in monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) and modern RFIC are also presented. A model has been developed to predict inductance, quality factor (Q), and self-resonance frequency of on-chip inductors well into mmW frequencies. A new chapter (chapter 7) is dedicated to treatment of power dividers and directional couplers. Theory and practice of microstrip couple-line directional coupler, Wilkinson power divider, Branch-line directional coupler, and Lange coupler are discussed in great detail. Even-odd mode analyses of some structures are presented through modeling and simulation. In chapter 8, theory and practice of wideband LNAs are presented for the first time. In particular, feedback amplifiers are discussed and many design examples are provided to demonstrate the concept. Theory and practice of noise cancelling LNAs, a popular technique in wideband IC design, is explored and novel circuits to achieve noise cancellation over extremely wide frequency range are introduced. In chapter 9, general theory of oscillator phase noise is explored for the first time and phase noise of several oscillators are discussed with examples. Traditional and modern theories of phase noise are investigated, and relation between phase noise and jitter is discussed. A comprehensive introduction to RF and Microwave system analysis is presented in chapter 10. Important system parameters such as noise figure (NF), amplifier nonlinearity including gain compression, intermodulation distortion, the intercept point, dynamic range, and AM-PM conversion are explored in detail. Survivability and reliability of RF and Microwave systems are addressed and major terminologies including failure rate and mission profile are discussed. System sensitivity to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and extremely sensitive electrostatic discharge (EESD), a serious issue concerning modern ICs are explained. A very powerful model is developed to analyze sensitivity of electronic devices and components to ESD and EESD. Methods of sensitivity mitigations are explored and offered. System requirements for power amplifiers in terms of output power, gain, linearity, efficiency, and power dissipation are studied for most important classification of power amplifiers including Class A, B, C, and D. Reliability of power amplifiers are also addressed. Mixer spurs, a serious issue potentially limiting performance of a mixer and the entire RF system, is explored analytically and with the aid of open source software. Finally, intermodulation distortion in multicarrier systems is explained, and noise power ratio (NPR) as a powerful test for performance evaluation of these systems is introduced. New trends in modern integrated circuit design and high frequency trends including RF/Photonic applications in microwave engineering are introduced and discussed. In general, passive microwave engineering is covered in chapters 1 through 7. Specific guidelines are provided, through examples, to design various transmission lines and completion of physical design. Two chapters (8 and 9) are focus of extensive active RF and microwave circuit design. Read more
